Florida State University had one of the first, if not the first, campus based Fact Book (Jones, 1996). Published in June of 1961 by the Office of Institutional Research and Service, the foreword of the first Fact Book details the motivation behind its creation:
During recent years many studies have been made concerning the Florida State University. These studies have resulted in routine reports which have been issued periodically by various University offices and special reports prepared by individuals and University agencies. Many of these studies have been made in response to requests: by University officers and agencies, by the Florida State Board of Control, by officers of the state government of Florida, by agencies of the federal government, by organization such as the American Council on Education and the Research Division of the National Education Association, and by other individuals and agencies. The studies have examined a wide variety of aspects of the Florida State University.
In view of the large number of studies completed and in response to a feeling of need that the essential findings of many of these studies be compiled into a single volume, the Office of Institutional Research and Service has prepared the text for this Fact Book.
Inasmuch as this is a first effort at a publication of this kind, there may be errors and omission of items which should have been included. Comments and suggestions are invited to the end that subsequent editions of the Fact Book may meet more adequately the needs of those who constitute the professional staff of the Florida State University.*
